DVD collection

My new-found passion for film has manifested itself as a rapidly-growing DVD and BD collection. Thought I would take some pictures of my collection so you can see what I’m working with. Some answers to inevitable questions and statements:

1 – “You own some terrible films!”

This is true. As explained in my “about” page, I only really got seriously into film a couple of years ago, and despite having frequent culls, there are still remnants of my earlier lack of taste. Plus, I’m a child of the 80s and I love films which remind me of my childhood even if they are bad, which may explain the Home Alone and Crocodile Dundee type of film. Bad films may also belong to my wife 😉

2 – “You suck at photography!”

This is also true. No excuses, only apologies.

3 – “Why are there gaps?”

As any DVD collector will tell you, we are often used as a rental service by friends and family. Any gaps in the first 8 pictures are due to DVD’s being out on loan.

4 – “What home cinema equipment do you use?”

At the moment, all the equipment runs through an AV receiver (a Sony STR-DA2400ES) before going to the Samsung 40″ TV. The TV is a few years old now, and is only a 720p set, but 720p is perfect for 40″ and the distance we sit from the TV. 1080p would not be a noticeable difference in viewing resolution in our current setup. Currently using 5 Tannoy speakers for surround, with an added Highline subwoofer. I use a PS3 for Blu Ray, DVD and gaming, and also have a Wii and an Xbox360. They are all connected to a wireless network and I stream movies and music here from our PCs.

Thought I would start by showing you the main viewing area.

The next 7 pictures are the shelves either side of the TV and thankfully alphabetized. While I am reasonably proud of my collection, it is in these next 7 pictures that you will find some films of questionable merit 😉 Click the pictures for full-size to see what the titles are.

Moving into the dining room area now, things get a little more messy and unorganised. Top shelf is reserved for my Eureka collection which is about half-complete.

Next shelf contains all my Hitchcock films (still have a lot more to get) and some various unsorted films that I have not yet alphabetized.

Next shelf was going to be just for collections (I have my Kubrick, Wilder and Gilliam/Python collections here) but again it now also contains various unsorted DVDs.

Next shelf is for my tiny BluRay collection. BluRay is a bit of an expensive medium at the moment so I buy sparingly. I have a couple of terrible BluRay movies purely as demo discs for my surround sound (that’s my justification for owning 2012 and Alice 😉 ). Also on the right are my Hammer discs and a few more unsorted films.

The last 2 shelves are reserved for TV series and comedy, but even these have been invaded by my still-wrapped, unwatched discs.

Finally the entire James Bond collection in a lovely 007 briefcase. A great present from my family.

As you can see I’m running out of space fast and I’m going to have to come up with some extra storage soon. I’ll update this page with better pictures or any new purchases worth noting.

Hi there. I am extremely jealous of your collection. Until I considered my collection something to be generally proud of, but in no way does it compare with yours. The quanity. Damn. Nice work. And come on, don’t apologize for owning a shitty for or two, we all have had our slumps in movie taste. Just consider yourself more appreciative of the first rate films for having seen the questionable ones.

    Anyway. Great collection.
